Bowing of legs could take place due to many reasons. Common causes include rickets (Vit D deficiency), dysplasia (abnormal bones since birth), infection, and fractures. When multiple bones are involved the height of the child can also be involved.
  
Chandani, a chirpy 12 year old girl of came to children orthopaedic centre with gross bowing of legs. She could not walk long and could not play with her friends. She had surgery for the same problem in childhood. As she was suffering from metaphyseal dysplasia (a condition of bone where the portion of the bone near the growing portion is abnormal) she had recurrence of the deformity. She was also the shortest girl in the class. To solve her problem of deformity and height Ilizarov technique was thought apt for her.
Ilizarov (Russian technique) is a specialized technique which can address both the problems simultaneously. This procedure requires perfect planning and experienced hands to provide desired results.
A special x ray done for her legs showed that she had problem in her hip region and the leg bones were curving inside at two levels. 
She had first stage surgery on her hips
  
 
She then underwent surgery on her right leg with Ilizarov technique. During this surgery her deformity was completely corrected and she gained extra length of10 cm.
After three months of right leg surgery she was operated on the other side.
  
Today she is a happy tall girl with straight legs and can walk long and play with her friends.
